Head of Paid Media Strategy & Analytics

SpeakEasy is a political tech startup that empowers Democratic candidates, causes, and campaigns to create, target, and launch audience-moving media strategies.

As the Head of Paid Media & Analytics, you’ll develop and implement digital and traditional advertising strategies across multiple channels for clients ranging from leading political and advocacy groups, to major brands and corporate initiatives.

This role is ideal for someone who is equally strategic, creative, and fiercely analytical. On any given day, you could be responsible for translating a client’s campaign objectives into a tactical media plan, supporting our engineering team in developing a new platform feature, writing an in-depth analysis of a campaign’s performance, or creating an engaging presentation for a set of funders. The ability to maximize budgets and leverage innovative optimization strategies will be key contributions you will be expected to offer our team, and our clients. This role will aim to further develop your depth of paid media experience, support your curiosity for innovation, and encourage your personal and professional growth.

SpeakEasy is located in San Francisco, CA but remote work is an option for this position.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Contribute to the strategy and execution of large-scale, multi-channel digital advertising campaigns, including tracking progress toward goals, monitoring budgets, and adjusting plans based on results and key metrics.
  • Serve as the main point of contact for several clients, including large, complex, multi-department engagements.
  • Provide responsive, timely, and strategic counsel to a variety of diverse clients, advising them on how to accomplish their goals in a given amount of time.
  • Participate in business development functions as needed, such as joining pitch meetings, contributing to proposals, and building media plans that outline platforms, targeting, creative, and estimates of results.
  • Analyze results and harness data to make informed decisions and offer strategic recommendations; develop client-facing reporting that seamlessly translates numbers into meaningful and understandable stories.
  • Develop cohesive plans for clients by thinking “big-picture”, leverage media diversification strategies based on budget, audience & objective
  • Keep up to date on the latest developments within the industry at large, ensuring that our practices evolve ahead of key competitors
  • Assist our engineering team in the management of tech-integrations into our proprietary tech-enabled media platforms.

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 3-7+ years in cross channel media planning (previous experience with political and advocacy digital campaign management preferred).
  • Well-versed in ad strategy and various paid digital advertising platforms, including various programmatic partners, Facebook/Instagram, Spotify, Google Search, Hulu, YouTube, and more (we will count on your ability to recommend strategic platforms – and targeting – to accomplish client goals).
  • Ability to effectively communicate the value of digital advertising to clients and prospective clients, and to make recommendations that align with their overall goals, objectives, and budget/time constraints.
  • Ability to effectively manage dozens of in-market projects on time, within budget, and meet performance goals.
  • Interest in & ability to support our engineering team in building data and platform integrations to scale our media services to serve clients up & down the ballot.
  • Considerate and thorough interpersonal communication skills, and the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams to see projects through to completion.
  • Hyper-diligent attention to detail.
  • A positive attitude and ability to take initiative and creatively solve problems.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to shift gears quickly, balance competing deadlines, and work efficiently in a fast-paced atmosphere.
  • A strong understanding of advertising performance data and metrics to help inform strategy and insights.
  • An ability to confidently negotiate competitive pricing for our clients across multiple data and media inventory platforms.
  • Enthusiasm for all aspects of digital media buying – we’re looking for a teammate who is equally at home creating multi-channel media plans as they are with jumping in to help our ad ops specialists set up a buy in Facebook or on a programmatic platform ahead of a big launch.
  • CSS familiarity is a plus.
  • Fluent in, or willing to learn, Google Data Studio, Google Analytics, DCM, Hubspot, Roku, DSP, The Trade Desk, and various social platforms’ ad management tools.

COMPENSATION: Based on experience.

Engineering Manager, Product:

THE ROLE:

As our Engineering Manager, you’ll join us to lead our team in building tools, features, and app-based solutions that help to make high-impact media and multi-channel management available to candidates, causes, and campaigns – up and down the ballot. By building features that make creative customization more immersive and interesting, sophisticated targeting more accessible, and clear media reporting more digestible – you’ll contribute to a team focused on growth, impact, and innovation in the campaign & electoral space.

As our Engineering Manager, you will work cross-functionally to guide products and connect the technical and business worlds. We’ll look to your leadership to break down complex problems into steps that drive product development, and to closely guide engineers, designers, marketers, and other teams in the design and development of technologies that improve participation in our nation’s electoral process.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Build and manage a team of 3-5 engineers and a UX designer/researcher, hiring top-notch individual contributors and giving them room to shine.
  • Be a strong mentor and cross-functional advocate for your team.
  • Understand team, product, engineering, and company dynamics enough to keep your team
    consistently focused and effective – including during high-stakes, fast-paced election seasons.
  • Teach your team to move fast while balancing quality. We can’t afford extensive processes, and we also can’t afford show-stopping bugs. We need people who can balance speed with quality while quickly building brand-new products, and thinking through innovative ways to always improve on our existing platforms.
  • Contribute meaningfully to team strategy. We give everyone a seat at the table and encourage active participation in planning for the future.
  • Communicate effectively, within the team and across disciplines. Work closely with product managers and designers to craft compelling user experiences.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 7+ years of industry experience, preferably building customer-facing features of a well-crafted app, or perhaps working in an agency to build a variety of experiences.
  • 3+ years of experience managing engineering teams.
  • Experience working on (or running) an Agile development team.
  • Technical fluency – the ideal candidate has a deep understanding of web applications and can oversee the product from the coding level and make decisions that balance technical debt, feature releases and bug fixes.
  • You care about craftsmanship and approach problems holistically, developing well-designed software that people love.
  • Entrepreneurial spirit. You must be self-directed, innovative, and biased towards action in fast-paced environments.
  • Excellent communication skills. You must be able to collaborate effectively with teams in a fully-remote environment, and discuss complex topics with technical and non-technical audiences.
TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS:
 
  • Knowledge of Ruby on Rails, or a similar web framework.
  • Experience with React or similar frontend framework.
  • AWS, docker, kubernetes familiarity.
  • Git, command line and ability to review and merge code.
  • Experience with Jira or similar project tracking system.

Full Stack Developer:

More than a capable coder, the right candidate will have experience as an effective leader tackling a wide range of software engineering problems. We’ll look to you to break down complex challenges into steps that drive product development, and we’ll ask you to work cross-functionally to both guide products and connect the technical and business worlds in the development of technologies that improve access and participation in our nation’s electoral process.

This role is open to remote candidates within a 5 hour timezone window around our Pacific Standard Time base of operations.

YOU WILL:

  • Contribute as a small Agile team of engineers to build, iterate, and improve a growing set of tech-enabled ad tools for users ranging from school board candidates to national voter advocacy organizations.
  • Solve technical problems of the highest scope and complexity.
  • Be responsible for guiding the big picture, while also managing the complexity of our codebase.
  • Manage the complete software development process from conception to deployment.
  • Maintain and upgrade the software following deployment.
  • Manage the end-to-end life cycle for the production of software and applications.
  • Oversee and guide the analyzing, writing, building, and deployment of software.
  • Oversee automated testing and provide feedback during the development process.
  • Communicate effectively with non-technical partners and colleagues; troubleshoot data issues with various internal and external partners.
  • Identify areas for optimization in existing platforms and implement them.
  • Evaluate tools and products to create the best and most cost-effective environment.
  • Work with a wide range of staff to collect requirements for new data requests.
  • Create and maintain documentation and training materials.
  • Implement production-quality solutions to business problems.

  • 2+ years of experience managing engineering teams.
  • Experience working on (or running) an Agile development team.
  • Technical fluency – the ideal candidate has a deep understanding of web applications and can oversee the product from the coding level and make decisions that balance technical debt, feature releases, and bug fixes.
  • A deep care for craftsmanship and an approach to solving problems holistically, developing well-designed software that people love.

COMPENSATION + PERKS: Competitive compensation: We offer a competitive salary ranging from 100,000 – 130,000 annually, dependent on experience – plus cycle-based bonuses.
